Title: Union Pacific's vision for railroad technology - 150 years young and still innovating
Abstract: An overview of some of the evolving areas of applied research in technologies targeted to support and enhance freight railroad operations in the United States. The speaker will overview many of the key problem domains and some of the anticipated technologies which might be used to address these areas. Emerging fields such as "dust" computing, advanced sensor technologies, "mesh" networks, energy harvesting techniques, robotics, vision systems, and many other areas of research will be explored for possible application to real world issues facing the transportation networks of the freight railroads in the U.S.

Bio: Lynden Tennison is presently the Senior Vice President of Information Technologies and Chief Information Officer for Union Pacific Corporation with responsibility for organizing and managing the development, implementation and operation of Union Pacific's information and telecommunications technologies. He was President and Chief Executive officer of Nexterna, a technology firm owned by Union Pacific, from 1998 through 2001. Prior to his time with Union Pacific he also served in various technical and management capacities at American Airlines and AT&T.
